Superatom Lab

Dedicated to study the chemistry and physics of superatomic clusters and nanoscale systems to solve pressing issues in sustainable chemistry, environmental remediation, and clean energy.

A Brief Intro...

Superatom Lab focuses on developing nanoscale materials particularly superatomic clusters, nanocrystals and 2D materials. The aim is to study the chemistry and physics of these nanoscale materials including surface chemistry, reactivity and stability, electronic and optical properties, and (photo)catalytic activity.  The lab is led by Dr. Rohul Hayat.

Feel free to contact me ([email protected]) if you would like to join me and/or collaborate with me. Here are current projects that I am working on. For further details, please refer to the Research Page.

  • Superatomic clusters: Synthesis of ligand-protected metal (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt, Ru) clusters using phosphine or some other organic ligands with tunable properties such as size selectivity, electronic and optical properties, chirality and catalytic activity.
  • Photocatalysis: Photochemical synthesis of high value-added molecules/ions like H2O2 and HOCl that are very important commodity chemicals. The aim is to employ green and sustainable chemistry to replace the currently energy demanding and waste generating industrial processes.
  • Water splitting and water oxidation: Photocatalytic (PC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting and water oxidation using Bi-based materials and porous materials like MOFs/COFs. The aim is to exploit the large surface area of MOFs/COFs to increase the mass transport, reactant adsorption, and thus catalytic activity.

New work of photocatalytic H2O2 generation over Au101/WO3

A new work is complete and has deposited on ChemRxiv. It is about photocatalytic H2O2 generation using Au101 clusters loaded on WO3 nanopowders. We found a high production rate and yield of H2O2 within an hour. It paves the way towards utilizing gold c...

How (managing) a research group is akin to a rock band

Creating a research group is difficult especially for a new principle investigator (PI). Managing it is even harder. Worse, you cannot work alone due to insufficient fund, incomplete instruments, lack of expertise and many more. One must team up with o...
